Maybe if they were all wealthy, white beauty queens

How many children died in Darfur this week? (How many around the world? How many were raped? How many forced into prostitution or war? How many infected with HIV?) And, given that, why is JonBenet Ramsey once again so important that CNN, FOX News(?) and all the major networks go into orgasmic spasms about an insane man who claims to have killed her (but about whom we apparently know little more than he is a pedophile who may not even have been in Boulder at the relevant time)?

I didn't say that he was okay--though you can marry at 16 with parental consent in that backwater state you are from. I said that this is not actually a very important piece of news. It's sensational, sure. But it just goes to remind us that one death is a tragedy and millions is a statistic.

To say that the recent “break” in the JonBenet case is not actual news is like saying that Madonna is not actually a singer, or George Bush was not actually elected in 2000; while the statement may be true, it ignores the sick and pivotal role that celebrity plays in our culture. You will listen to everything Nancy Grace has to say, and you will like it.

Also, Jonny-B (as I call her) is the Lindsay Lohan of dead beauty queens. The strange men, the outrageous lifestyle, the steady diet of cocaine and sequins – you’re not sure why, but you can’t look away, and you’re secretly holding your breath for the day she clocks Paris Hilton in the middle of the street.

It’s possible that I need therapy.

No, but all of this media attention is garnering some great press for my emo band, The JonBenet Ramsies (formerly the Jennifer Lover Hewitts).
